Frequently Asked Questions

The FAQ below are only addressing the topics that are often raised by our users. Please refer to our online help for a complete list and description of DNA's features.

- DNA database update: There are new networking devices released every day and it is neteXpose priority to add them into the thousands of devices already supported. The DNA database is upgraded weekly with new devices found on large real world networks by customers, partners and IT experts. The latest database update can be obtained by emailing your name, position, company and phone number to support@netexpose.com.

- Using DNA remotely: DNA comes with its own web server on port 81: DNA can be reached from any other computer with a web browser with the URL http://DNA IP address:81. In case of conflict, the port 81 is changed in the RUN.BAT file.Note that DNA is protected by a username/password in order to keep the information confidential. Also note that closing the browser does not stop the web server so that the DNA application is still available on the network. The DNA services are stopped via the "Shutdown DNA" option (right click the taskbar DNA icon).

- DNA username and password: Login information is available by contacting support@netexpose.com.

- Supported web browsers: Supported browsers are Internet Explorer 6, Firefox 1.x, Netscape Navigator 4, with JavaScript and CSS. Microsoft Excel and Word exports are better integrated with Internet Explorer.

- Spyware and virus: To guarantee its products are safe, neteXpose is using multiple spyware and virus removers during the development, testing and production of its softwares. The consequence of this is that we are aware of a couple "false positives".AntiVir gives a false positive for the signature of the SPR/Processor.20 program in the Java file Process.exe file. This should be "Always ignored" or "Allow". PestPatrol finds "WhatWhere" trace when scanning DNA. This is another false positive and should be ignored.

- Cookies and DNA Login: Cookies must be enabled to open and run a DNA session. If cookies are not enabled, a "Welcome Onboard" message is displayed for a few seconds before the logging screen comes back.Microsoft Internet Explorer users: from the menubar, select the Tools menu and then 'Internet Options...', select the 'Security' tab. Select the appropriate web content zone (usually Internet) and press the 'Custom Level...' button. Scroll down to the section 'Cookies - Allow per-session cookies (not stored)', select 'Enable' and press OK.

- Personal Firewall: Windows XP SP2, ZoneAlarm and other firewalls must allow the 3 DNA processes to transmit/receive traffic: DnaWebServer, DnaEngine, DnaDeviceProcess. If DNA does not launch, temporarily disable the firewall and launch DNA again. Do not forget to turn the firewall on again.

- Java: The inventory Real-Time Monitoring requires a Java JVM version 1.4.2 or above. After launching an inventory, if DNA displays the Real-Time Monitoring page with a Java icon only, a JVM must be installed.

- Unknown devices: It may happen that DNA does not recognise a network device, maybe because it is very old or very new.Unknown devices are highlighted in the Advanced / Add Unknown Device tab where the user has the opportunity to add this device to the database. For a complete integration of this device, to show serial number for example, the Advanced / Mibwalk tab should be used to collect the device mib content. The mib file should be compressed (ZIP) and emailed to support@netexpose.com. The device will be integrated within 5 working days and an updated database sent back for free.

- Database support: DNA supports the following databases: Microsoft Access, mySQL and Oracle.By default and for ease of installation, Microsoft Access is used. For large networks, it is recommanded to switch to mySQL. How to use mySQL or Oracle is described in the Help file.

- Microsoft Excel and Word: Exporting to Microsoft Excel and Word may not work on Microsoft Windows XP machines depending on their level of hotfix. Recent hotfixes restricting Word and Excel to open HTML pages, the workaround is to export data into HTML via the "Printer Friendly Version", save it to disk and open it with MS Word or Excel.
